GENERAL

Jockey Paul Sarlo was found guilty of failing to fulfill his riding engagements under ARR 85 B on 1 January 2004.  He was issued with a $100 fine wholly suspended on the provision that he commits no similar offence for the remainder of the racing season.  In mitigation stewards took into account the fact that Mr. Sarlo had not offended under this rule during the last eight years of riding at King Island race meetings.

Stewards concluded an inquiry from 13 December 2003 into the reasons that BRILLIANT DESIRE lost ground near the home turn in the last race on that day.   At this point SOUTH ROAD (C Dean) (to the inside of BRILLIANT DESIRE) shifted out marginally from its position on the rail and at the same time TRAVEL POINT (Cheryl Rogers(a)), to the outside of BRILLIANT DESIRE rolled in marginally resulting in BRILLIANT DESIRE having to be steadied by its rider.

Near the 1300m ROBARCH (Paul Sarlo) shifted in resulting in GO GAZER (Kelly Cossman (a)) having to ease and SOUTH ROAD (Mark Horobin) being severely checked and losing ground forcing COMIC CONNECTION (Marc Ball (a)), RECHARGED (Peter McLean) and ZARDONI (Shannon Brazil) who were following all to be checked.

Jockey P Sarlo was charged under AR 137 (a) in that near the 1300m he allowed his mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of GO GAZER (Kelly Cossman (a)) and SOUTH ROAD (Mark Horobin) resulting in GO GAZER being eased and SOUTH ROAD being severely checked.  Jockey P Sarlo pleaded not guilty but was found guilty of the charge.  A fine of $200 was issued to P Sarlo, in not issuing a more severe penalty stewards took into consideration P Sarlo’s good record with regard to this type of offence.

Upon deliberation stewards dismissed 2nd verses 1st finding that although SAINTS ABOVE had shifted in over the last 100m there was no direct interference caused to BRUSHMAN.

The protest 3rd verses 2nd was also dismissed as stewards found that although the running of LUCIBEAR became tightened just before the winning post the extent of the interference did not exceed the margin at the end of the race between 2nd and 3rd.

The protest of 4th against 2nd was upheld, as stewards were satisfied that in the concluding stages BRUSHMAN had shifted in and taken the running of CHANGE THE JACK and that the extent of this interference had exceeded the margin at the end of the race.  The amended placings were 1ST - SAINTS ABOVE, 2ND – LUCIBEAR, 3RD – CHANGE THE JACK and 4TH - BRUSHMAN.

Upon inquiry it was established that in the last 100m SAINTS ABOVE had shifted in but remained clear of BRUSHMAN to its inside which had continued to shift in resulting in CHANGE THE JACK to its inside being tightened and checked as well as LUCIBEAR being tightened just prior to the winning post.

Jockey P Sarlo was issued with a reprimand for this incident.

• An events calendar outlining race dates and specific details about each race, plus the growing range of social events now associated with the Carnival.

• A feature races page detailing major race events and closing dates for race entry.

• An extensive guide about how to get to Tasmania and to the Carnival, including air and boat travel options.

• An owners and trainers section that provides race program downloads and background information about previous AAMI Tasmanian Summer Racing Carnivals. This section also features testimonials from successful trainers and owners and information regarding transporting and stabling horses in Tasmania.

• A media information section that includes a facility to download all carnival branding and imagery in a variety of formats.

TOTE Tasmania Chief Executive Terry Clarke said in addition to providing valuable information to interstate visitors, the web site would provide Tasmania with an excellent opportunity to showcase this prestigious event nationally and worldwide.

“TOTE Tasmania and the racing clubs are very proud of the development of the AAMI Tasmanian Summer Racing Carnival over the past three years,” he said.

“While we have been working very hard to promote the Carnival and the fun and excitement of great social events such as the AAMI Hobart and Launceston Cups, we are also keen to raise the profile of Tasmanian racing and Tasmania as a national tourist destination at this time of year.

“Our new AAMI Tasmanian Summer Racing Carnival web site will obviously assist us to achieve this.”

The web site address is: www.tsrc.com.au.

The Club’s veterinary surgeon inspected RANOS BOY prior to the start and passed the gelding fit to take its place in the field.

The start of this race was delayed approximately one to two minutes due to the horses arriving at the barriers a little late and also due to MYSTICAL JEWEL (B McCoull) breaking through the front of its barrier gate after being loaded.  MYSTICAL JEWEL was quickly restrained by its rider and returned to behind the barriers where it was inspected by the veterinary surgeon and passed fit to take its place in the field.
