RACE 1 - TOTE TASMANIA MAIDEN PLATE – DIVISION 1

3-Y-O & UPWARDS – SET WEIGHTS

1100 METRES - 12 RUNNERS

The Club’s veterinary surgeon inspected MALLOW prior to the start of this race when the filly was found to have a laceration on her right hip, and passed it fit to take its place with the field.

The race book failed to show Jockey C Burt as the rider of AL BAGDAD.

Trainer Tania Kennedy pleaded guilty to a charge under LR-34 (c) in that she failed to declare a rider by the prescribed time. In all the circumstances, Stewards issued a fine of $50.

Trainer Tania Kennedy was reprimanded under AR-140A for negligence in the saddling of AL BAGDAD when it was discovered at the barriers that the girth was done up to the stirrup leather.

The start of this race was delayed slightly when AL BAGDAD (C Burt) proved difficult to load. As a result, Stewards advised Trainer Tania Kennedy that a warning had been placed on this horse regarding its loading manners.

As the start was affected, NOT RESPONSIBLE (C Kingston) and STORM RAJ (D Pires A) made contact.

Shortly after the start, MALLOW (S Maskiell) jumped in resulting in PERSONAL PEAK (J Borrett) having to be steadied.

Stewards ordered the Judge’s placings to stand and correct weight was declared. It was established that approaching the 250 metre mark, BLUE BIALIA (D Parish) rolled in under pressure, momentarily crowding MISTELLA (D Keating A). It was noted that Jockey Parish stopped riding and straightened immediately and in the opinion of Stewards, Apprentice D Keating was able to ride his mount out in his normal manner to the finishing line. Stewards reminded Apprentice Keating in the strongest terms that when considering lodging an objection in future, he has the option of viewing the Stewards’ patrol films before proceeding with an objection as in their opinion today’s objection bordered on being frivolous.

DENON (L Goodrick) and GO LIKE ELLE (S Tsaikos) were slow to begin.

TACTICAL ERROR (W Stacey A) over-raced in the early and middle stages.

At about the 600 metre mark BLUE BIALIA (D Parish) laid in on to TACTICAL ERROR (W Stacey A). As a result MINNIE MOUSQUITO (J Borrett) which was racing to the inside, was crowded and had to be eased.

Stewards questioned Trainer Neil Richardson after the running of this event regarding the apparent improved performance of CREIGHTON (NZ). Trainer Richardson stated that since the gelding’s disappointing run on 24 November, he had changed the training program and taken the gelding to work on the beach rather than gallop him on the track and in his opinion this had a bearing on the gelding’s improved performance in today’s event.

A swab sample was taken from the winner of the race CREIGHTON (NZ) (Trainer Neil Richardson).

Upon inquiry it was established that at approximately the 400 metres, CONVERSATIONS (C Kingston) shifted out across the heels of the tiring GOODNIK (R Bradley A) then rolled out marginally when insufficiently clear of SQUIRE MOOR resulting in the gelding being tightened and checked and carried out wider on the track, contacting and inconveniencing HIGHSTRUNG (S Tsaikos). At the same time TARNI ROSE (M Goring) laid in and away from BAY RITZ (B McCoull) and also tightened HIGHSTRUNG in on to SQUIRE MOOR. RACE 3 - SHEARWATER COUNTRY CLUB MAIDEN PLATE 1175 METRES - 13 RUNNERS

MY DRAW (Ken Lewis) and PRINCE SALEM (Stephen Maskiell) were both slow to begin.

HIGH WIND (Ken Moore) suffered a bleeding attack, for the second time, at approximately the 600 metre mark and was retired from the event. Acting under the provision of A.R.53A (5), trainer Miss Judith Galic was advised by stewards that this gelding is no longer permitted to race in Australia.

Over the concluding stages PRINCE SALEM (Stephen Maskiell) was inclined to lay in under pressure despite the efforts of its rider.

Over the concluding stages MOZZY (Kevin Dodge) and STILL SMOKIN (Ruth Bradley (a)) contacted on a number of occasions, which resulted in MOZZY being momentarily steadied.

TACTICAL ERROR (Kevin Ring) tired noticeably over the concluding stages. Stewards ordered a veterinary inspection of the gelding which revealed no abnormalities.

After the running of this race a number of riders expressed concern with regard to the safety of the track. Shortly thereafter stewards conducted a track inspection with jockey representatives and also a Club representative. Upon conclusion of the inspection it was decided to reschedule the remaining races back one race. However, upon a further later inspection stewards deemed the track to be unsafe. Acting under A.R.8 (q) stewards, in consultation with the Club, postponed the remainder of the meeting as they deemed the course to be unsafe due to earlier inclement weather.

GENERAL

KONISHIKI (Simon Snell) was a late scratching at 1.10 p.m. when an application was made by the trainer and owner representatives, Mr T Blacker and Mr M Heffernan respectively, for this gelding to be withdrawn due to deteriorating track conditions. Stewards acceded to their request, however informed both parties that this gelding would not be allowed, in future, to race on heavy tracks and when engaged, and tracks were rated slow, the stewards would consider each situation on its merits.

Jockey Mr Ken Moore pleaded guilty to a charge under A.R.120 (b) for accepting the rides on POWER OF PETITE (Race 1) and ALTRADOT (Race 4), for which he could not draw the allotted weight. Mr Moore was fined $100.

RACE 1 – RAIN & HORNE SORELL MAIDEN PLATE – 1920 METRES – 9 RUNNERS

The start of this race was delayed slightly due to ALIOCHA’S CRAVING and LENNOX having to be re-saddled at the start.

LENNOX (M Hamilton (a)) became fractious in the gates after being loaded.

TENORIN (K Sanderson) stood flat footed, was slow away and lost 2 – 3 lengths at the start.

US ONLY (S Snell) raced wide on the first turn.

The saddle on SONAR DREAM (P Michaelides) slipped forward shortly after the start and as a result Jockey Michaelides was unable to fully assist his mount approaching the 1400 metre mark and dropped back in the field and thereafter pulled this colt up at approximately the 900 metre mark.

Rounding the home turn, shortly prior to straightening, MIDNIGHT ESCAPADE (C Kingston) shifted outwards slightly and carried POWER OF PETITE (B McCoull) wider on the track. As a result US ONLY (S Snell) was also carried wider by POWER OF PETITE.

US ONLY (S Snell) laid in in the straight.

Stewards questioned Jockey Kingston the rider of MIDNIGHT ESCAPADE regarding the tactics adopted on this filly today. He stated that at this filly’s previous start she was drawn wide over a 1310 metre distance and although she began well he elected, as a result of being drawn wide, to settle in a backward position. Thereafter she responded to hard riding from approximately the 900 metre mark to run a good second. Today his instructions were to ride the filly closer to the pace if possible and to find a comfortable position in running. He stated that as she jumped fairly well he was able to find a position in running closer to the pace however, after leaving the half mile mark runners commenced to go around the field and take up a position forward of this filly. Thereafter rounding the home turn she shifted out under his riding and continued to do so in the straight. Stewards noted his explanation.

RACE 2 –RAIN & HORNE KINGSTON MAIDEN PLATE – 1080 METRES – 12 RUNNERS

SHANTLE (D Keating (a)) jumped awkwardly and outwards at the start and contacted with LA VAIN (K Lewis). At the same time BEAR’S SCENE (D Pires (a)) jumped outwards and contacted with KENTUCKY BOURBON (S Maskiell). Also at the start EASY AS (S Snell) jumped outwards and contacted with QUEST FOR GOLD (C Burt)

Approaching the 900 metre mark CHARZARD (P Michaelides) shifted outwards slightly and brushed with BEAR’S SCENE (D Pires (a)) and carried this gelding outward slightly.

PIA BOOMBA (J Borrett) raced green in the straight.

KENTUCKY BOURBON (S Maskiell) shifted ground inwards in the straight.

A post race veterinary examination of CHARZARD (P Michaelides) revealed no obvious abnormalities.

A swab sample was taken from the winner of the event PIA BOOMBA (Trainer John Blacker).

RACE 3 – CASCADE PREMIUM CLASS 1 HANDICAP – 1080 METRES – 10 RUNNERS

Approaching the 650 metre mark TURBULENT FORCE (S Tsaikos) through its head up and commenced to race ungenerously for a number of strides and was restrained by its rider and as a result shifted outwards slightly and dropped back in the field. As a result of this movement GILT WINGS (S Maskiell) who was following had to be checked.

GILT WINGS (S Maskiell) cast an off fore shoe in running.

A swab sample was taken from the winner of the event SHINING OCHRE (Trainer Peter Luttrell).

RACE 4 – MS CHALLENGE CLASS 2 HANDICAP – 2120 METRES – 6 RUNNERS

RACE 5 – RAINE & HORNE HOBART CLASS 2 HANDICAP – 1310 METRES – 10 RUNNERS

Jockey Lisa Balding the rider of JEKYLL was found guilty of careless riding AR 137(a). The particulars of the charge being that whilst riding JEKYLL at approximately the 650 metre mark she allowed her mount to shift inwards when insufficiently clear of BARKER (P Michaelides) and carried this gelding in onto SHIRVINGTON (S McFerran) racing to the inside which resulted in SHIRVINGTON having to be checked by its rider for a number of strides. Jockey Balding was suspended from riding in races for a period of two race meetings commencing midnight 5th November 2002 and to expire midnight 17th November 2002. Jockey Balding has the right of appeal. It was established that SHIRVINGTON made contact with the inside running rail as a result of this incident.

AERIAL PURSUIT (S Snell) laid in in the straight.

A post race veterinary examination of PONTOON (L Goodrick) revealed the gelding to have minor abrasions above its off hind hock.

A swab sample was taken from the winner of the event TRUE CLASSIC (Trainer Vincent Baron).

RACE 6 – R A WINZENBERG TROPHY WEIGHT FOR AGE – 1205 METRES – 9 RUNNERS

Notwithstanding the fact that the race book indicated that apprentices were entitled to claim they were in fact not entitled to claim in this event. An announcement to this effect was made prior to the event. In addition a press release in this regard was released on Friday 1st November 2002 advising of this change.

WOBBLEY (D Pires (a)) was slow away at the start.

The race book indicated Jockey Ken Lewis as being the rider for METEOR MAN (NZ) when in fact the rider was Jockey Ken Moore. Stewards established that it was an error in the race book and that Jockey Ken Moore was the rider declared for METEOR MAN (NZ). An announcement to this effect was made prior to the running of the event.

A post race veterinary examination of STORM YACHT (S Tsaikos) revealed this gelding to have an elevated respiratory rate.

A swab sample was taken from the winner of the event SEDATION (Trainer John Blacker).

RACE 7 – RAINE & HORNE CLASS 4 HANDICAP – 1310 METRES – 8 RUNNERS

SPOILT BRAT was a scratching prior to 8.00 AM on race day. It was reported to Stewards that this gelding bled after track work on Saturday 2nd November 2002. Stewards received a veterinary certificate in this regard which stated that the horse was examined endoscopically and it was found to have had blood in the lower trachea coming from the lungs. In view of the report and based on the balance of evidence available to Stewards this gelding was deemed to be a bleeder on the day and the provisions of AR 53A(4) apply. SPOILT BRAT may not be trained, exercised or galloped on any racecourse for a period of two (2) months and it may not start in any race for a period of three (3) months effective 2nd November 2002, whereafter it is to satisfactorily trial over at least 1000 metres in the presence of a steward. Trainer Mr. Ken Dixon advised stewards that a stable return will be lodged in due course advising that this gelding will be retired from racing.

DAYDREAM STAR (R Bradley (a)) threw its head up on jumping and jumped a little awkwardly.

TORRIANN (S Tsaikos) was slow away at the start.

VIDEO FLYER (S Maskiell) was momentarily held up rounding the home turn and thereafter shortly after straightening was again held up for a clear run and had to switch to the inside of HONOR BELLE (NZ) (L Goodrick) to obtain clear running.

OTAKIMAN (S Quilty) laid in under pressure in the straight.

RACE 8 – RAINE & HORNE INTERNATIONAL CLASS 4 HANDICAP – 1080 METRES – 9 RUNNERS

An announcement to this effect was made prior to the running of the event.

CORINDHAP (C Burt) was slow away at the start and lost 2 – 3 lengths on the field and thereafter failed to muster early speed. When questioned about this geldings performance Jockey Burt stated that after jumping away slowly the horse never traveled well and she felt something was amiss. In her opinion today’s track condition may not have suited this gelding as the underfoot conditions were too firm. Stewards noted her explanation.

A post race veterinary examination of CORINDHAP revealed no obvious abnormalities.

SPIT THE PIP (K Lewis) over-raced in the early and middle stages of the event.

Shortly after leaving the 1500 metre mark, IONACOLUMBA (B McCoull) had to be momentarily eased when FEENISH (C Burt) crossed towards the inside running rail. Shortly thereafter IONACOLUMBA became crowded for galloping room when both LILAC SKY (C Kingston) and EAST WEST (S Snell) shifted inwards slightly and at the same time DAYBREAK DAWN (P Michaelides) shifted out marginally which resulted in CHAPELLERIE (D Pires A) making contact with the hindquarters of IONACOLUMBA which unbalanced this filly. As a result, Jockey McCoull (IONACOLUMBA) was forced to check his mount. In the circumstances, Stewards could attribute no blame to any one particular rider, however, Jockey Burt, the rider of FEENISH and Jockey Snell, the rider of EAST WEST, were shown the video of the incident and advised to take far greater car when shifting ground in future.

Trainer W H Burt reported to Stewards after the race that FEENISH had pulled up sore. A subsequent veterinary inspection revealed FEENISH to be lame in its near foreleg. Trainer W H Burt will be advised that a veterinary certificate of soundness must be tendered prior to its next race start.

Shortly after leaving the 600 metre mark MATSONATION (P Michaelides) when being restrained off the heels of EASY AS (C Burt), shifted out abruptly and ran off the track. Thereafter this horse shifted back in abruptly towards the inside running rail. When questioned about this horse’s behaviour, Jockey Michaelides stated that the horse was dead in the mouth and raced very greenly and as a result he was unable to steer it around the turn near the 600 metre turn after being eased off the heels of runners in front. Stewards noted his comments.

RACE 4 - K R PEARCE SUPERVOBIS 2-Y-O HANDICAP – 1080 METRES

8 RUNNERS

The announcement of correct weight was delayed as Jockey S Quilty, the rider of the fourth placegetter (QUIRK) wished to view the official video patrol film. After viewing the film, Jockey Quilty advised that he wished to lodge a protest against MANCHA (C Kingston) being declared the second placegetter on the grounds of alleged interference at about the 250 metre mark. After considering evidence from all the parties concerned and viewing the official Stewards’ patrol films and acting on their own observations, the protest was dismissed. Stewards ordered the Judge’s placings to stand and correct weight was declared. It was established that approaching the 250 metre mark, MANCHA (C Kingston) when struck with the whip, shifted in abruptly and inconvenienced QUIRK (S Quilty) who had to be momentarily steadied by its rider. Jockey Kingston, the rider of MANCHA immediately put both hands on his reins when that gelding shifted in and straightened his mount. As a result of the corrective action taken by Jockey Kingston, his mount shifted outwards and inconvenienced AXIOM (K Dodge) to its outside who had to be eased by its rider.

MANCHA (C Kingston) was slow at the start, losing two to three lengths.

Stewards inquired into a report that Mr Lomasney, the Trainer of AXIOM, had in his possession prior to the start of this event, a device that resembled a syringe. It was established that the device was in fact an "oral doser", incapable of having a needle fitted to it. Mr Lomasney explained that he had been using this device to rinse his horses’ mouths prior to racing for in excess of twenty years. Stewards also viewed a second device presented by Mr Lomasney at the inquiry also referred to as an "oral doser". In the circumstances Stewards adjourned the inquiry to take further evidence to established whether there had been a contravention of AR 178A.

A swab sample was taken from the winner of the race QUEEN OF EGYPT (Trainer T Young).

RACE 5 - H W GREGG CLASS 6 HANDICAP – 1205 METRES – 8 RUNNERS

RACE 7 - CASCADE PREMIUM CLASS 1 HANDICAP – 2120 METRES

10 RUNNERS

The Club’s veterinary surgeon inspected SILENT AUCTION prior to the start of the race as the mare had rubbed hair off both hips in transit to the races, and passed the mare fit to take its place with the field.

Approaching the winning post for the first time, RIVIERA PRINCE (J Robertson A) raced up onto the hindquarters of US ONLY (S Snell) and clipped the heels of this filly, blundered, fell and dislodged Apprentice Robertson. As a result, BANDMAN (S Maskiell), REGAL SWORD (K Dodge) and KATHY’S PRIDE (B McCoull) who were following were inconvenienced. SILENT AUCTION (S Quilty) was unable to avoid the fallen horse and fell as a result of contact with this horse, dislodging Jockey Quilty. Both riders were conveyed off the track by the on-course medical staff and the race continued. Both Apprentice Robertson and Jockey Quilty were transported to hospital for observation.

A post-race veterinary inspection of SILENT AUCTION (Trainer Mr John Blacker) failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities.

A post-race veterinary inspection of RIVIERA PRINCE (Trainer Mr Gary White) revealed minor grazes to its hind legs with no other abnormalities.

RACE 8 - W L CLOAK CLASS 2 HANDICAP – 1080 METRES – 10 RUNNERS

The start of this race was delayed when MY KERRIE MAREE broke through the front of its barrier gates and bolted the entire course and thereafter crashed through the outside running rail at approximately the 1400 metre mark. Trainer Mr David Brunton was advised that MY KERRIE MAREE must perform satisfactorily at an official barrier trial during which it is to behave in a tractable manner in the barrier gates before its next race start.

DEVON RELAY (C Kingston) was slow away at the start.

Shortly after the start, RANCHERIE (S Snell) shifted in and carried TURBULENT FORCE (K Dodge) inwards which resulted in BANTAM WEIGHT (S Maskiell) becoming crowded for galloping room between TURBULENT FORCE and BARKER (K Lewis) to its inside. As a result, BANTAM WEIGHT and BARKER made contact for a number of strides. Jockey Snell straightened his mount and shortly thereafter continued to race towards the inside running rail. In the process TURBULENT FORCE was checked by its rider. After inquiring into this incident, Stewards established that in relation to the second incident, Jockey Snell was sufficiently clear of runners and it appeared that he steadied when crossing and slowed the pace slightly. Stewards took into account that TURBULENT FORCE is a big striding horse and galloped a little awkwardly just prior to being restrained by its rider. Notwithstanding this fact, Stewards reminded Jockey Snell of his obligations when shifting ground and advised him to take far greater care when shifting ground in the future. TURBULENT FORCE was again slightly inconvenienced to the inside of NORMAN FLYER (C Burt) at about the 600 metre mark when this horse made the turn awkwardly.

A post-race veterinary inspection of MY KERRIE MAREE revealed minor cuts to the left side of its neck.

Shortly after straightening, BEAR’S SCENE (K Dodge) was again held up for a clear run behind PAINTED RHIARI (L Goodrick) and MINNIE MOUSQUITO (M Hamilton A) and had to switch to the inside of PAINTED RHIARI (L Goodrick) to obtain clear running.

Race 7 – Post Billpay Class 2 Handicap – 1920 metres – 6 runners

Stewards inquired into a report made by the trainer of CALL ME DIGGER, Mr Douglas Brazendale. Mr Brazendale reported to Stewards that it was his opinion that this gelding was not ridden to instructions and consequently was not run on its merits. Mr Brazendale stated that his instructions were for this gelding to take up a forward position and for Jockey Michaelides to allow the horse to stride freely. When questioned, Jockey Michaelides stated that as a result of this gelding being tardily away at the start and this coupled with the fact that runners on his inside were being ridden forward, he was unable to take up a forward position. Thereafter, at the crossing at about the 1800 metre mark, he found himself three deep and elected to take a seat behind BADGER’S RETREAT (K Dodge). Jockey Michaelides was of the opinion that if he had encouraged his mount at this point to go forward, he would have found himself four to five deep on the turn and this, in his opinion, would have been detrimental to the gelding’s chances. After considering the evidence by both parties and after viewing the video footage of the race in question, Stewards were of the opinion that Jockey Michaelides may not have ridden to instructions on this occasion, however, they were satisfied that there was sufficient reason that prevented Jockey Michaelides from riding to instructions. It was Stewards’ view that no action be taken in this matter as they could not establish that this gelding had not been ridden on its merits.

A swab sample was taken from the winner of the race, DALWINA, (Trainer Mr Leon Wells).

RACE 2 –SPREYTON PARK FUNCTION CENTRE –SUPERVOBIS THREE YEARS OLD MAIDEN PLATE – 1175 METRES – 14 RUNNERS

Stewards enquired into an incident rounding the home turn when NICANOVA (David Pires (a)), racing on the rails, was checked by its rider. Upon enquiry, it was established that KENTUCKY BOURBON (Simon Snell) shifted out approximately half a horse and PRINCE RAFTER (Mark Goring), which was following, attempted a run to the inside of this gelding. Shortly thereafter KENTUCKY BOURBON shifted back in towards the rail, carrying PRINCE RAFTER in on to NICANOVA. In all circumstances, stewards could not attribute blame to any one rider, however, Mr Snell was advised, in the strongest terms, that he is to ensure, when shifting ground in future, he is sufficiently clear. Mr Goring was advised, in the strongest terms, that he must ensure, when attempting a run, there is sufficient room to do so. In arriving at their decision, stewards took into account that Mr Pires stated his mount, throughout the run, was reluctant to race inside runners and in his opinion this may have been caused by the addition of blinkers for the first time.

TERVORT (Stan Tsaikos) was inclined to race greenly throughout.

RACE 3 – GUINOT PARIS MAIDEN PLATE – 1175 METRES – 14 RUNNERS

COBBERSHINE (Mark Goring) was slow to begin, losing five lengths.

After the event stewards ordered a veterinary inspection of CHOKITO, which revealed no abnormalities.

Stewards queried Mr Kelvin Sanderson, the rider of BEAN STALKER, with regard to his lack of whip use over the concluding stages. Mr Sanderson stated that on previous occasions when under the whip, BEAN STALKER had a tendency to become unbalanced, however, under strong hands and heels riding, the gelding, in his opinion, races truly. Stewards noted his explanation.

After the event Mr Brendon McCoull, the rider of TRUST FUND, stated, in his opinion, this gelding had knocked up and he therefore did not ride his mount out in his usual manner. A veterinary inspection of TRUST FUND revealed the horse blew significantly and recovered slower than expected. There were no further abnormalities detected.

RACE 1 – THE ADVOCATE – SUPERVOBIS THREE-YEAR-OLD MAIDEN PLATE –990 METRES - 9 RUNNERS

PRINCE RAFTER (K Moore) and KENTUCKY BOURBON (S Quilty) contacted on jumping.

VERDANT (L Goodrick) became crowded for galloping room shortly after the start between LYMINGTON (S McFerran) and HASTY QUEEN (J Borrett).

Following the running of this event stewards established that the barrier gate to the outside of SKI STAR (Mark Goring) was left vacant and all horses drawn to the outside of this filly had been loaded in their correct order from gate 7 onwards. Stewards questioned the starter, Mr P Hall, as to the reasons why this particular gate was left vacant. He explained that as a result of SKI STAR becoming fractious in the gates, the gate to the outside of this filly was left vacant. Stewards advised Mr Hall that notwithstanding the fact that the Rules of Racing provide a wide discretion to the starter to ensure a safe and fair start for all horses, it is not policy to leave barrier stalls vacant, based on the reason forwarded. Mr Hall was advised to discuss the matter with his barrier staff to prevent a recurrence in future. Stewards were unable to determine that any prejudice had been suffered by horses drawn to the outside of SKI STAR.

Jockey M Goring, the rider of SKI STAR, reported at scale that when this filly became fractious his skullcap had made contact with the barrier structure prior to the start being effected. Following the running of this event jockey Goring was examined by the on course medical staff who declared him fit to fulfill his remaining engagements. Stewards inspected jockey Goring’s skullcap to establish whether it had suffered a severe impact in the incident. Upon inspection of the skullcap, and having questioned jockey Goring, it was established that there was no severe impact.

A post-race veterinary inspection of GREY INTRIGUE revealed the gelding had blood in its mouth, which was of nil significance.

A swab sample was taken from the winner of the race, GREY INTRIGUE (Trainer Barry Campbell).

The track was upgraded to slow at 2.00 p.m.

RACE 2 –QUICKMIX CONCRETE MAIDEN PLATE – 1175 METRES - 7 RUNNERS

SUMMER NIGHT (K Moore) was slow away at the start and failed to muster early speed. A post-race veterinary inspection revealed no abnormalities.

RUNAKO (L Balding) raced greenly from approximately the 600 metre mark until the entrance to the home straight.

BELLADONI (C Burt) appeared to resent the whip in the straight and attempted to buck over the concluding stages.

Jockey B McCoull, the rider of MY DRAW, reported at scale that his horse was hanging out throughout the event. Stewards spoke with jockey McCoull in this regard and showed him the video footage over the concluding stages of the event where his mount continued to hang out and shifted ground outwards, which resulted in DALWINA (S Quilty) having to be momentarily steadied between this mare and SWIFTS CREEK (David Keating (a)). Jockey McCoull was advised that, in the opinion of stewards, he could have made a far greater effort to straighten his mount by stopping riding and putting both hands on the reins to straighten. A post-race veterinary inspection of MY DRAW revealed blood on both near bumpers, which was of nil significance.

A swab sample was taken from the winner of the race, SWIFTS CREEK (Trainer Terry Roles).

RACE 3 – 7AD CLASS 1 HANDICAP – 1175 METRES - 8 RUNNERS

LICAM LICAL (S Quilty) was slow away at the start, losing 1-2 lengths.

GLEN IRIS LAD (M Goring) contacted with LOCK ME AWAY (S McFerran) on jumping.

A swab sample was taken from the winner of the race, PASIELLES (Trainer Vern Poke).

RACE 4 – ATKINSON & GIBSON MAIDEN PLATE – 1600 METRES - 10 RUNNERS

After being loaded into the barriers FYNDARN FLYER (K Dodge) became fractious when BIEGA (Simon Snell), to its outside, became fractious. As a result BARLEY MOW INN (David Keating (a)), drawn to the inside of FYNDARN FLYER, also became fractious. The veterinary surgeon inspected all three horses prior to the gates being released and declared them fit to take their place with field. An announcement to this effect was made prior to the running of the event. A post race veterinary examination of all three horses revealed:-

  1. BARLEY MOW INN – sustained injury to near hind and on return to scale found to be lame. A veterinary certificate of soundness will be required prior to the gelding’s next race start.
  2. FYNDARN FLYER – no abnormality detected.
  3. BEIGA – sustained injury in pre-race barrier incident but no abnormality detected.

BIEGA (S Snell) jumped in at the start and contacted with FYNDARN FLYER (K Dodge), who in turn contacted TOLDO (NZ) (L Goodrick).

Leaving the 600 metres, FYNDARN FLYER (K Dodge) commenced to give ground and dropped back in the field, which resulted in BARLEY MOW INN (D Keating (a)), following to its inside, becoming crowded for galloping room and having to be checked by its rider and switched to the outside of FYNDARN FLYER. Both POWER OF PETITE (K Moore) and LUCKY DALE (S Quilty), who were following, were inconvenienced as a result.

Approaching the 150 metre mark BIEGA (S Snell) ducked out sharply and as a result jockey Snell had to put both hands back on the reins to straighten his mount.

RACE 5 – SPREYTON VETERINARY CLASS 1 HANDICAP – 1800 METRES - 7 RUNNERS

RUSSIAN SPY (NZ) (D Keating (a)) jumped awkwardly at the start and contacted the barrier gate.

HUTTON (P Michaelides) jumped the crossing at the 200 metre mark.

BANDMAN (B McCoull) grazed its shoulder in an incident in the mounting yard. The gelding was examined by the veterinary surgeon and the injury was of nil significance.

RECHARGED (L Goodrick) was examined by the veterinary surgeon post-race and no abnormality was detected.

RACE 6 – RICHMOND CONCEPTS AND PRINT HANDICAP – 1175 METRES - 10 RUNNERS

On return to scale it was found that FOUND EAST (David Keating (a)) had cast its off fore plate in running.

A post-race veterinary inspection of WARPED revealed that the gelding blew significantly and had a poor/slow recovery. There were no further abnormalities detected.

Jockey Phil Michaelides, the rider of BEAU EROS, was found guilty of a charge under A.R.175(a), the terms of the charge being that he acted in a dishonest manner when weighing in after the running of this event in respect of his mount BEAU EROS, placed fourth by the Judge, when he weighed in without one of his stirrup irons and leathers and in doing so failed to declare this fact to the stewards. In coming to this decision, stewards took into account a host of facts and the only reasonable inference stewards could draw from those facts was that jockey Michaelides’ conduct was dishonest in the circumstances. Jockey Michaelides was fined $1500. He has the right of appeal against the decision of stewards.

RACE 7 – TOTE SPORT RADIO CLASS 2 HANDICAP – 1380 METRES - 10 RUNNERS

The announcement of correct weight was delayed when the connections of the fourth placegetter, WEE SQUEEZE (J Borrett), wished to view the photo finish of the race. After doing so the connections were satisfied that the correct placing was awarded to their horse and correct weight was announced.

BICAPOBLUE (D Keating (a)) jumped awkwardly at the start and inconvenienced A LITTLE NEDDY (C Kingston) and WIND FORCE (S Quilty).

Approaching the 600 metres WIND FORCE (S Quilty) was momentarily eased when FAST RIDE (S Snell) shifted in slightly. Jockey Snell, the rider of FAST RIDE, was shown the video of the race and advised to take far greater care when shifting ground in future.

FAST RIDE (S Snell) shifted in approaching the crossing at the 200 metres and had to be steadied off the heels of A LITTLE NEDDY (C Kingston) and switched to the outside of this horse.

A post race veterinary examination of A LITTLE NEDDY (C Kingston) revealed that the colt blew excessively and had a very poor recovery. There was no associated lameness and no further abnormality.

RACE 8 – WINNING EDGE PRESENTATIONS CLASS 4 HANDICAP - 1800 METRES - 11 RUNNERS

BLACK LIGHT (R Bradley (a)) jumped awkwardly at the start.

LUMINOUS PRINCE (K Dodge) reared as the gates opened.

Shortly after the start BLACK LIGHT (R Bradley (a)) was restrained by its rider when racing in a tightly bunched field and switched to the outside of SILK ‘N’ ROSES (B McCoull).

COOL LAD (K Sanderson) laid in over the concluding stages.
