Shortly after the start SOUCHE (Danny Miller) commenced to race fiercely, getting its head in the air racing ungenerously. At the 1000m SOUCHE shifted inwards away from MADAM GUNDA bumping MARSCARA (L. Camilleri) which had thrown its head. MARSCARA then steadied and rolled inwards inconveniencing RECALL A STORM (D. Randall). HIDE THE HALO (S. Parnham), which was following SOUCHE, was also impeded. At the 900m RECALL A STORM struck the running rail. Approaching the 800m SOUCHE, which continued to race fiercely, shifted outwards bumping DANGEROUS PLAY which made contact with SHE’S A ROSE (P. Harvey) on its outside. When questioned Jockey Danny Miller explained that SOUCHE did not settle at any stage and raced erratically throughout. Trainer Mr P. Leaving the 800m he had slapped KEY FLYER up in an attempt to work into the race and approaching the 500m had pulled the whip on the gelding. In his opinion KEY FLYER was disappointing and had not finished the race off with any authority. He further stated that KEY FLYER appeared to race better when fresh. Trainer Mr L. Trew agreed that it was a disappointing performance and it was his intention to have a blood count carried out on KEY FLYER.
