RACE ONE CLASS D HCP - 13OO M

When the gates opened TOTALLY SPELLBOUND was slow to jump away.

Shortly after the start BARTORQ had to be checked off the heels of BYALAP. T Gillett, rider of BRIGHT VISION was severely reprimanded for shifting out and in so doing taking UPTON out onto BARTORQ which forced BARTORQ out onto the heels of BYALAP. In reprimanding T Gillett, stewards acknowledged that UPTON rolled out after being taken out. However T Gillett was notified that in future he is required to stop riding and straighten his mount sooner than he did on this occasion.

Racing down the back straight TILTAWHIRL raced ungenerously due to the sand being thrown back.

Mr S Brown, trainer of FLYING CAPE was fined $50 for failing to lodge a stable return showing M Sullivan, P Waller and P Jones as the nominators of that gelding (NT56).

On the turn near the 650 metres DELEVOP hung out and in so doing took ARAGORN out.

In the straight EL COMBA had a tendency to lay out.

When the gates opened DALRIADA jumped away awkwardly and bumped VINTAGE RED.

Steward questioned Mr N Connor, trainer of STRATEGIC FEELING about that gelding’s disappointing performance today. Mr Connor stated that he was happy with the geldings first up run today and although he had done enough work he would have preferred to trial the horse prior to today and that he was confident STRATEGIC FEELING would perform better at its next start.

Stewards questioned B Huppatz, rider of OVERSLADE LANE about that gelding’s disappointing performance. B Huppatz stated that the gelding got back as expected but failed to run on at any stage of the race and that he could offer no explanation for it’s performance today. Stewards questioned Mr A Trengrove, trainer of OVERSLADE LANE about the gelding’s performance. Mr Trengrove stated that he expected the gelding to perform better than it did and his only explanation was that the horse was second up today. He also stated that on return to scale he noticed whip marks on it’s flank which may have effected it’s performance.

RACE FOUR CLASS 1 HCP - 11OO m

Prior to correct weight connections of second placed REDISON requested to see the photo finish image.

When the gates opened REVOQUE STAR was slow into stride.

Near the 900 metres AWESOME VENTO, which was racing greenly had a tendency to shift ground and is so doing made contact initially with POETIC TROUBADOR and shortly after REVOQUE STAR. Also at this stage POETIC TROUBADOR was racing greenly and shifted ground.

Approaching the 600 metres POETIC TROUBADOR overraced and got its head up when being eased off the heels of KISSING DOWN.

Near the 100 metres POETIC TROUBADOR had to be eased when tightened for room between KISSING DOWN (P Shiers) which rolled in slightly and ARGYLL. As a result POETIC TROUBADOR clipped the heels of ARGYLL. P Shiers was severely reprimanded and notified that is similar circumstances in future he would be expected to stop riding and straighten his mount.

Approaching the winning post POETIC TROUBADOR, which was racing ungenerously and laying out, eased off the heels of KISSING DOWN which rolled in slightly.

1st MOSSE 2nd REDISON 3rd KISSING DOWN

RACE FIVE CLASS 5 HCP - 12OO M

Stewards questioned G Clarke, rider of C’EST LE VIE which performed poorly. G Clarke stated that the gelding did not jump away well when the gates opened and it raced at the back of the field until the 500 metres then when he attempted to improve, the gelding failed to respond or make any ground. He further stated that C’EST LE VIE was blowing hard on pulling up. The clubs veterinary surgeon inspected C’EST LE VIE subsequent to the event and reported that the gelding had blood in it’s off side nostril.

Stewards questioned P Denton, rider of SILENT MAJORITY which performed poorly. P Denton stated that he rode the gelding back off the pace today as he believed the gelding raced better that way. However today he believed the gelding felt ordinary in its action and failed to run on at any stage. The clubs veterinary surgeon inspected SILENT MAJORITY subsequent to the event and reported that he could find no apparent abnormality.

1st SHADOW BOXER 2nd AMBER STYLE 3rd CALIGULA

RACE SIX OPEN HCP - 15OO M

Approaching the turn at the 1300 metres EL CARTERO had to be eased off the heels of RAJA BOY (K Dodge) which shifted in. Stewards severely reprimanded K Dodge for shifting in when not sufficiently clear and notified him that in similar circumstances he would be expected to give other runners more room when shifting ground.

S Leckey (a), rider of HALIFAX notified the stewards that his mount had a tendency to lay in during the race.

Near the 300 metres GALIANO (NZ) (P Denton) attempted a tight run on the inside of HALIFAX. As GALIANO (NZ) shifted in to take the run HALIFAX rolled in. This resulted in GALIANO (NZ) having to be checked severely. Stewards notified P Denton that in their view it was a doubtful run and in future he must exercise greater care. After being checked GALIANO (NZ) was disappointed for a clear run for the majority of the straight.

CLAD was a late scratching at 1.25pm when jockey J DITTMAN became indisposed and there was no other rider available. CAPRICE NOIR (G Lefoe) proved difficult to load into the barrier stalls. BLETCHY (B Huppatz) jumped outward coming into contact with STRATEGIC HIT (M Cornell) as start effected. BOGHASI (R Faehr (a)) shifted in at about the 100 metre mark brushing with DRURY'S CLASSIC (P Johnson)

NT 7: CLASS 2 HANDICAP 1200 METRES 11 STARTERS

JAYASHARI (M Cornell) was slow into stride. At about the 200 metre mark RAJA MAHAL (G Lefoe) had to be eased momentarily when SANTA BOY (T Norton) shifted in and BURRAN (W Orbell) shifted out forcing GO BRAGH (P Crich) onto RAJA MAHAL (G Lefoe). Subsequent to the race jockey T NORTON, rider of SANTA BOY and W ORBELL, rider of BURRAN were severely reprimanded by Stewards and instructed that they must make a great effort to keep their mounts on a straight course in future. Apprentice R FAEHR, rider of MAKE ME A KING stated to Stewards that although his mount had raced well in the early stages of the race he had been under pressure from the 400 metre mark and the gelding could not respond to his riding from that point.

NT 9: OPEN HANDICAP (1) 1200 METRES 9 STARTERS

DUCHOVNY (B Cornell) jumped awkwardly as start effected and was then slow into stride. Stewards informed jockey T GILLETT, rider of MARKET LINK that they would expect him to show more vigour in the final stages of a race and ride his mounts out at least hands and heels to the finish. Stewards were of the opinion that in this case the result of the race was not affected.

NT 11: OPEN HANDICAP (2) 1200 METRES 9 STARTERS

HE'S TOUGH ENOUGH (B Cornell) jumped in the air as start effected. GREY DESERT (B Huppatz) was slow to begin. Jockey AG ROBINSON, rider of GONG NAPAR reported to Stewards that the gelding had appeared uncomfortable throughout the race and had failed to stretch out at any stage of the race. Subsequent to the event a veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.

LIKE ALESHIA (L Stojakovic (a)) was slow to begin. ON return to scale a veterinary examination of LIKE ALESHIA revealed that the mare had sustained an injury to her nearside shoulder. A veterinary certificate of soundness will be required by Stewards before being permitted to start again.

DASH IN FRONT (J Hallam (a)) jumped in the air as start effected. DASH IN FRONT (J Hallam (a)) came tino contact with the running rail at about the 1200 metre mark. Approaching the 600 metre mark DASH IN FRONT (J Hallam (a)) who was inclined to over race had to be eased off the heels of REGENT COPY (N Paine).

NT 4: CLASS 2 HANDICAP 1200 METRES

WOUNDS (N Paine) jumped in the air as start effected and then stumbled. Jockey N PAINE, rider of WOUNDS reported to Stewards that WOUNDS had raced ungenerously in the early and middle stages of the race.

1ST SYLVAN GREEN 2ND WOUNDS 3RD BURRAN

NT 5: TROBIS MAIDEN PLATE 1200 METRES

SARASON'S GIRL (M Cullen) jumped outwards onto GOLD HAWK (T Huish) who bumped GREY POVERTY (B Huppatz). ANASCOT jumped awkwardly coming into contact with BROTHER WINSTON (J Hallam (a)) resulting in ANASCOT losing considerable ground. Jockey J DITTMAN, rider of UPTON the 2nd placed horse lodged an objection against CREDITWISE being declared the winner for alleged interference at the 250 metre mark and again at about the 50 metre mark. After taking evidence from both riders and the connections of the horses and viewing the race videos, Stewards dismissed the objection and correct weight was declared. Subsequent to the race Stewards established that approaching the 250 metre mark CREDITWISE had shifted out slightly and UPTON had shifted inwards. At the 50 metre mark. CREDITWISE did shift inwards but Stewards were of the opinion that CREDITWISE was clear at the time. Stewards warmed jockey J DITTMAN, rider of UPTON that they considered that his protest bordered on being frivolous and that they may take stronger action in future.

1ST CREDITWIDE 2ND UPTON 3RD BROTHER WINSTON

NT 6: OPEN HANDICAP 1100 METRES 11 STARTERS

JUROMA (M Cullen) broke through the front of the stalls prior to start being effected JUROMA was inspected by the vet and passed fit to run. Approaching the straight entrance JEREMIAH BULLFROG (P Denton) had to be eased across the heels of JUROMA (M Cullen) and in doing so bumped C'EST LE VIEW (J Hallam (a). At the 200 metre mark PALOOKA (B Huppatz) had to be checked when EMPHASIS (P Crich) shifted in and ASPEN STAR (W Orbell) shifted outwards, JUROMA (M Cullen) who was racing behind those horses at that point had to be eased. Subsequent to the race Stewards opened an inquiry into the incident and found due to inconclusive evidence. Blame could not be attached to any one rider but cautioned all riders involved that they must take greater care when shifting ground in future. On return to the enclosure the veterinarian reported that FINAL CLOSE had sustained injuries to both front fetlocks trainer of FINAL CLOSE stated to Stewards that the horse would be retired.

GONG NAPAR (T Norton) had to be eased off the heels of ACCELERATING (G Lefoe) at the 600 metre mark. GONG NAPAR (T Norton) was eased around the heels of PURE GOLD at the 350 metre mark.

ENTITLEMENT reared at the start and was slow away. CALIGULA was slow into stride.

The clubs veterinary surgeon inspected SKIING subsequent to the event and reported that the gelding had lacerations to the near hind fetlock.

RACE TWO 3YO CLASS 2 HCP - 12OO M

At the start REGENT COPY jumped inwards taking STAGE KING inwards. At the same time ZIPPA RAJA jumped outwards causing in turn QUEEN OF THE NORTH, ENVIRONS, FLYING CAPE and DALRIADA to shift outwards. This resulted in STAGE KING and DALRIADA bumping which caused KOSSI PRINCE, which was racing close behind, to clip heels almost bringing that gelding down. FLYING CAPE and DALRIADA were also checked at this point. Evidence was taken from all jockeys involved and as there were a number of contributing factors, no further action was taken. However jockeys were reminded to keep their mounts clear in future in order to protect their fellow riders.

Rounding the first turn FLYING CAPE had a tendency to hang out.

Jockey M Cullen, rider of REGENT COPY reported that the gelding raced erratically. He believed this was in his opinion due to the use a rubber tongue tie.

Trainer A Trengrove was fined $20 for the use of club colours.

At the start LORD ERSKINE and ARGYLL came together and OVERSLADE LANE was slow away.

For about 100 meteres after the start REDISON, DEE VEE DEE and FREEDOM FUNDS bumped on several occasions.

Trainer of ARGYLL B Halter was fined $50 for presenting that mare without it’s approved gear (Tongue Tie) AR140(a).

Trainer G Clarke was fined $50 for failing to lodge a stable return for LORD ERSKINE showing that horse entering his stable within 48 hours as required by LR56.

Stewards concluded an inquiry into the conduct of licensed person Mrs E Brown in the jockeys room after the last race on 17/5/03. Mrs Brown was fined $200 for unseemly behaviour after pleading guilty (AR175(q).

Ms L Edwards, representing Mr S Paynter, trainer of FREEDOM FUNDS was notified that a veterinary certificate of soundness must be produced for the gelding prior to it again racing. Approaching the 200 metre mark GEODUDE (L Stojakovic (a)) shifted inwards onto IN THE SWING (P Crich) who was forced onto BEST OF KEN (P Johhsnon) who came into contact with the running rail. Stewards opened an inquiry into the incident and after taking some evidence Stewards adjourned the inquiry at the request of Apprentice STOJAKOVIC and Mr R MERRALL who was in charge of apprentice STOJAKOVIC until Monday 26 May 2003 at 5pm to allow Ms C GREEN, the Master of apprentice STOJAKOVIC to attend.

PEKAN ROSE (W Orbell) and WOUNDS (P Crich) came together shortly after the start was effected. Subsequent to the race KOHINOOR BLUE (G Lefoe) was declared a non starter when the horses start gate failed to open correctly. Though the starting gate of SMARTLY EVIDENT and PEKAN ROSE were marginally slow to open, Stewards after viewing the video and taking all circumstances into consideration were of the opinion they were not placed at a disadvantage. Subsequent tot he race Stewards ordered all monies wagered on KOHINOOR BLUE to be refunded and a deduction of 7c in the dollar for the win and 8c in the dollar for the place on all successful wagers.

Prior to correct weight being declared, connections of second placed OAKLEIGH BOY requested to see the video of the straight. After they had viewed the video film of the straight, stewards declared correct weight.

Approaching the 200 metres FULL GALLOP shifted in slightly taking OAKLEIGH BOY inwards towards GANGA. Shortly after this OAKLEIGH BOY shifted out abruptly and bumped FULL GALLOP causing that gelding to become unbalanced and it’s rider R Caddies (a) to stop riding and balance his mount.

On jumping away ANNUAL LEAVE shifted in onto POSTA VECCHIA and hampered that gelding badly.

Racing down the back straight ANNUAL LEAVE raced greenly.

During the race POSTA VECCHIA had a tendency to lay out which resulted in the gelding having to be eased of the heels of MOSSE near the 500 metres.

On jumping away EL SUROSO shifted in onto GREAT EAGLE.

D Bates, rider of BYALAP reported that his mount had a tendency to lay in.

T Perry, rider of GREAT EAGLE reported that her mount hung in for the entire race. The clubs veterinary surgeon inspected GREAT EAGLE subsequent to the event and reported that the gelding was lame in the off foreleg. Ms A White, trainer of GREAT EAGLE was notified that a veterinary certificate of soundness must be produced for the gelding prior to it again racing.

When the gates opened HIGH REVS knuckled.

T Perry, rider of HALIFAX which performed below expectations, stated that it sweated up profusely before the race and may not have been suited by being ridden up in the lead early but other than that she could offer no explanation.

Stewards ordered a veterinary examination of LEGAL GOLD subsequent to the race which revealed that LEGAL GOLD had suffered an injury to both hind pasterns.

PILLSBURY ATTACK was a late scratching at 12.40pm by order of the Stewards acting on vet's advice. No race incidents. The scratching of PILLSBURY ATTACK was late being notified to the TAB due to an administration error.

NT 8: OPEN HANDICAP 2000 METRES 12 STARTERS

SEA ROYAL (M Cullen) had to be eased at about the 100 metre mark the first time when GREY DESERT (N PAINE) shifted in slightly. SEA ROYAL (M Cullen) raced wide from the 1200 metre mark to the home turn. HI TAIL (B Cornell) had difficulty obtaining a run at about the 300 metre mark. Subsequent to correct weight being declared the Judge notified Stewards that an error had been made in the 3rd and 4th placings in the race where the correct placing should have been HI TAIL 3rd and CYPRESS LAKE 4th. Mr A SMEDLEY stated to Stewards that after semaphoring the places he had perused the photo finish further and discovered that he had made an error. Stewards perused the image and then within their powers under NT144 amended the placings to DUHOVNY 1st, VITELLI 2nd and HI TAIL 3rd. NT144 in part reads; no alteration to the Judges places after correct weight will have any effect on previous orders given by Stewards as to the payment of bets. Connections of CYPRESS LAKES represented by Mr V OLDFIELD and HI TAIL, Mr G COLEMAN were advised by Stewards of their decision. At a subsequent Inquiry into the incident the Judge, Mr A SMEDLEY was made aware of the seriousness of the incident and severely reprimanded. Prior to the race Stewards made an examination all jockeys gear after they had weighed out.

MAGIC WEASEL (P Johnson) raced wide from about the 1200 metre mark forcing STAR DAMSEL (D Lockwood (a)) wide from the 500 metre mark until straightending. Subsequent to the race Stewards questioned jockey B HUPPATZ, rider of CYPRESS LAKES into the gelding's disappointing performance. Jockey B HUPPATZ stated that his instructions were to endeavour to lead if possible, if unable to lead to be on the pace. Jockey HUPPATZ stated that the horse did not appear comfortable throughout the race and was under hard riding from the 700 metre mark and failed to make any ground at all. The Trainer of CYPRESS LAKES, Mr V OLDFIELD confirmed the riding instructions given to jockey B HUPPATZ and stated that he could not offer an explanation for the performance. Stewards ordered a veterinary examination and a swab from CYPRESS LAKES. The veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.

SILENT MAJORITY (P Denton) was restless in the starting stalls prior to start being effected. PURE GOLD (J Hallam) was slow into stride. SILENT MAJORITY (P Denton) jumped inwards at start. COPPER'S EDGE (B Cornell) and SILENT MAJORITY (P Denton) brushed after travelling 50 metres.

Approaching the 600 metre mark EROGENOUS (NZ) (J Hallam (a)) had to be checked. At about the 400 metre mark LE SAINT (B Huppatz) appeared to be tightened for room. Stewards opened Inquiries into both incidents and after taking some evidence Stewards adjourned both Inquiries until 11am on 26.4.03 to allow them to obtain the films of the race.

WINNING BLIND (N Paine) was restless in the stalls prior to the start being effected WINNING BLIND (N Paine) struck the side of the gates at start. About 100 metres after the start PRINCE ANTHONY (R Thompson) and ROCKHOUND (P Losh) were both hampered when PUNK (L Stojakovic (a)) shifted inwards. L STOJAKOVIC, rider of PUNK stated to Stewards that she had difficulty in controlling her mount at that point. Stewards recommended to Mrs C GREEN, trainer of PUNK that a stronger rider be engaged for the gelding in future.

GALVESTON STORM (D Short) and BORDER (B Cornell) came together as start effected. SYLVAN GREEN (P Denton) had to be eased slightly when CALIGULA (J Hallam (a)) slowed at about the 1000 metre mark. Subsequent to the race apprentice J HALLAM was fined the sum of 150 under ARR137c making a celebratory gesture prior to the winning post.

Approaching the 600 metre mark ABOVE ALL (N Paine) had to be eased when ACCELERATING (P Denton) rolled in slightly. Jockey N PAINE, rider of ABOVE ALL and W ORBELL, rider of KALASHOW were both reprimanded under ARR137A (b) excessive use of the whip when their mounts were out of contention.

At about the 100 metre mark SON OF GRACE (N Paine) had to be checked when STAND BY ME (D Tootell) shifted in and SCOTRO (P Denton) who was racing on the inside shifted outwards. Jockey D TOOTELL, rider of STAND BY ME stated to Stewards his mount had resented being struck with the whip and had caught him unaware by suddenly shifting ground. Jockey P DENTON stated to Stewards that his mount SCOTRO had been difficult to ride throughout the race continually hanging out. Stewards recorded a racing incident and took no action. Jockey D TOOTELL, rider of STAND BY ME reported to Stewards that his mount had slipped at the start and had failed to handle the track during the race.

Approaching the 700 metre mark SPORTS GAIT (S Leckey (a)) shifted outwards resulting in BINOCULARS (P Crich) having to be eased. S LECKEY (a) was reprimanded by Stewards and instructed that he must take greater care when shifting ground in future. Jockey S BROWN was questioned by Stewards in regard to the run of VITELLI. S BROWN stated that VITELLI had jumped satisfactorily but had not been able to muster the early speed. He also stated that when he was able to take closer order the gelding had resented the sand coming back. He further stated that the gelding had become unbalanced at about the 200 metre mark. Stewards noted S BROWN'S Explanation, but informed him that they would expect him to make a greater effort in the early stages of a race in future.
